Becoming a Social Entrepreneur

Why Don’t You Initiate a New Style of Working?

In a persistently sluggish economy, lack of employment is a major social problem. However, even in this type of economy, some people leave their jobs because their employment fails to provide meaning. Often, some people feel they are not doing exactly the kind of work they would like to do. We seek to help these kinds of people find worthwhile jobs within social enterprises that aim to contribute exclusively to the local community and economy. Why don’t you consider working in these types of social enterprises as social entrepreneurs?

Social enterprises are considered the third sector after the government and commercial businesses. This course is funded by the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare. It explores the potential for social enterprises to create a new job market in the local community.

This great opportunity will allow you to contribute to your local community by using your accumulated knowledge and skills. If you are interested in participating in this course, please contact Hello Work.

“Hello Work” is a public job placement office (kōkyō shokugyō anteijo).1 The above quote appeared on a recruiting poster advertising a vocational training course (see the recruitment flyer shown in photograph 6.1). This course targets the increasing number of unemployed individuals who are trapped in the persistently sluggish Japanese economy. This vocational training course is intended to nurture social entrepreneurs who will support the New Public Commons, a policy discourse currently advocated by the DPJ government. This training course, which was funded by the national government, was established in the summer of 2010.
